Frequently Asked Questions

Are your courses approved by the IRS and CTEC?

Yes, we are approved both by the IRS and CTEC (California Tax Education Council). You can find our company listed on both websites by looking for the Jordan Tax School listing, and clicking the website link.

Do you offer assistance to students while taking the course, and during the tax eason?

Absolutely. If you have any questions about the material of your course, or a tax question during tax season, you will have access to one of our tax experts to ask any questions you may have. We’re here to help you learn.

Am I required to enroll in the Annual Filing Season Program as a tax preparer?

Not all states require tax preparers to take continuing education, but the AFSP can offer many benefits to tax preparers even when it’s not required of them to take. States like California, Oregon, and Maryland do require tax preparers to be registered and be enrolled in continuing education every year. We offer California tax courses (CTEC) for anyone who wishes to prepare taxes for a fee in the state of California.

Can I access my course at anytime, even when I've completed it?

Yes, you will always have access to your course, even if you completed it. Any course you enroll in will be available at all times, and will never expire. Simply login with your credentials to access the course. You can also download and print the course so you can view it while you’re offline.

Benefits of the Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP)

The Annual Filing Season Programs main purpose is to recognize the efforts of non-credentialed return  tax preparers who wish to a gain a higher level of professionalism and expertise. Below are some of the main benefits of enrolling in our AFSP course.

Limited Representation Rights

Annual Filing Season Program participants will have limited representation rights; meaning they can represent clients whose returns they have prepared and signed, but only before revenue agents, customer service representatives, and similar IRS employees (including the Taxpayer Advocate Service). PTIN holders without an AFSP – Record of Completion will only be permitted to prepare tax returns. They will not be allowed to represent clients before the IRS.

Free Advertising From The IRS

Annual Filing Season Program participants will be included in the public directory of tax return preparers. This means that your potential customers can find your company listed on the IRS website as an approved tax preparer. This is free advertising!

Show Your Credentials

As a tax preparer, you want your customers to feel comfortable with letting you prepare their taxes, and being enrolled in the Annual Filing Season Program will allow you to do just that. After successful completion of the Annual Filing Season Program, you will receive a Certificate of Completion that can be presented in your office.

How Many Credit Hours Do You Need?

When purchasing an AFSP course, you need to make sure you’re purchasing the right one. There are two different AFSP courses, one being an 18 Hour Non Exempt course, and the other being a 15 Hour Exempt Course.

If you are an “Exempt” tax preparer, then you need to take the 15 Hour Exempt AFSP Course, which includes 10 hours of tax law, 3 hours of tax law updates, and 2 hours of ethics.

Non Exempt Tax preparers need to take the 18 hour Non Exempt AFSP Course, which includes 10 hours of tax law, 6 hours of the Annual Federal Tax Refresher Course (AFTR), and 2 hours of Ethics.

Are You Exempt, or Non Exempt?

Tax preparers are “Exempt” if they have done any of the following:

1.Anyone who passed the RTRP test administered by the IRS from November 2011 to January 2013.

2.State Registered return preparers who are active registrants of the following:
 – Oregon Board of Tax Practitioners
 – California Tax Education Council (CTEC)
 – Marland State Board of Individual Tax Preparers

3. Certain credentialed professionals
 – Accredited Business Accountant or Advisor (ABA)
 – Accredited Tax Preparer (ATP)

4Passed Part 1 of the Special Enrollment Exam for Enrolled Agents
 – Tax Practitioners who have passed the SEE Part 1 within the past two years.

5. VITA volunteers
 – Quality reviewers and instructors with active PTIN’s.

6. Enrolled Agents and CPA’s
 – Enrolled agents and CPA’s do not need to take the AFSP as they have their own standards for continuing education

Being “Exempt” means you do not have to take the 6 Hour AFTR (Annual Federal Tax Refresher) course. You’ll only need to complete 15 hours of continuing education to enroll in the Annual Filing Season Program.

If you are “Non Exempt”, then you will have to complete 18 hours of continuing education, which includes the 6 hour AFTR (Annual Federal Tax Refresher) course.
