Tax Pros who participate and successfully complete the IRS AFSP course will receive an Annual Filing Season Program — Record of Completion. This gives a tax preparer a number of benefits that help both the tax professional and the tax payer ensure that their returns are filed properly and accurately.

We give students unlimited time to complete their CTEC courses as well as unlimited attempts to pass their CTEC course exams, so if you don’t pass on the first attempt, that’s okay, you can take it again. And we do not charge extra fees to retake your exams.


We will report your course completion to the IRS within 24 hours of completing your course. If you need your hours reported sooner, Reporting times are subject to change and are not guaranteed.

Are you exempt from the Annual Filling Season Program Course ?

Those that are on the left column below, are exempt from taking the AFSP Annual Filing Season Program or the AFTR Annual Federal Tax Refresher, as they have already received appropriate education by the requirements of their state or other jurisdiction. The IRS AFSP is voluntary and comes with many great benefits from the IRS, such as being able to represent your tax clients before the IRS, and having your tax business listed in a public directory on the IRS website (Free Advertising!).

Agent Enrolled The agent is exempted as long as he holds current EA credential
Certified Public Accountant The accountant is exempted as long as he holds current EA credential
Lawyer Exempted as long as the lawyer holds current credential.
Previous IRS Registered Tax Preparers Exempted only for return preparers who passed the Registered Tax Return Preparer test administered by the IRS at Prometric Testing centers before January 2013.
California Tax Education Council CTEC Return preparers who are currently registered with CTEC
Enrolled Retirement Plan Agent (ERPA) Exempted as long as agent holds current ERPA credential
Accreditation Council for Accountancy and Taxation (ACAT)
Exempted for return preparers who hold either an ATP (Accredited Tax Preparer) or ABA (Accredited Business Accountant / Advisor) credential.
IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteer VITA quality reviewers, instructors and preparers who pass the basic and /or advanced VITA examination with active PTINs.
Oregon Board of Tax Practitioners Exempted for return preparers who are currently registered with Oregon
Maryland State Board of Individual Tax Preparers Exempted for return preparers who have passed the Maryland examination and / or are currently registered with Maryland

How to obtain a PTIN Number with the IRS

Step 1 – Complete a CTEC 60 Hour Tax Course

Step 2 – Purchase a $5,000 Tax Preparer Bond (Cost $25 a year)

Step 3 – Apply and obtain a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) with the IRS

Step 4 – Register with CTEC online at and pay $33 Registration Fee
